Cork has been used by mankind for millenia. As far back as 3000 BCE, cork was being used in China, Egypt, Rome and Persia. Even mighty Zeus honoured the cork oak and his oracles would consult the rustling of its leaves to interpret his message. Mediterranean cork oaks go back at least as far as 25 million years, possibly more. 

Sustainable by Nature

Cork oaks are remarkable for their ability to regenerate their bark after harvest. The process of harvesting the bark of the cork oak is not destructive to the tree itself. Skilled harvesters remove the bark of the cork tree by hand during July and August of each year and each tree is only stripped  every 9 years to allow for the tree to regenerate. A well managed cork oak can live up to 250 years, allowing for approximately 16 harvest in a lifespan.

In the process of renewing the bark, the cork oak sucks up five times more CO2 than it otherwise would. This carbon is then stored within the bark of the tree. In fact, for every kilogram of cork produced, an average of 55 kilograms of carbon is absorbed from the atmosphere.
